Farmington Homecoming 2008
Last night was Farmington's Homecoming game.
I went to the game with Luke and Chloe too.
However, Chloe was meeting her friend Rachel there, so I sat with her for 25 minutes.
Luke took off with his friends as soon as we walked into the gates.
SO....LUCKILY.....I found my friend Patti and her husband Greg.
Patti and I teach together....we taught on the same team for 6 years.
I have been working in Farmington for 9 years, and this is the first football game I have ever gone to. Luke had never been either.
Luke had a blast at the game, and I had a good time too.
Next weekend is Lakeville South Homecoming...so we are going to that game too!

Too Funny
First, let me tell you that I was disappointed in Grey's Anatomy.
I missed ER too...but did tune in to see a season regular die. Very touching....and hard to believe.
I found this picture on Facebook....and it MAKES ME LAUGH!!!
Mike is one of my dearest friends.....and he and I are like the same person.
After this picture he said:
After this picture he said:
"SERIOUSLY!!! Like I really needed a hairnet! Let's be honest!"

New Grey's
I had conferences tonight...and am running home to catch the Season Opener of Grey's Anatomy.
I am excited to see what happens tonight.
What a great way to relax after conferences.
The sad thing is that tonight is two hours long.
I am supposed to watch ER too. This is it's last year on the air...and Noah Wyle comes back.
I've been watching it for SO MANY YEARS....ever since the first season. It really was a fantastic show.
This is ONE GOOD THING ABOUT FALL.....
A new TV season!

I'm A Faller
SO, those of you who know me well, know that I'm a faller.
I fall off sidewalks, I miss steps, I trip over cords at big wig school district functions, I fall while moving big dumpster containers full of rocks....I FALL!!!
Last Sunday my foot slipped on my blanket, and our beautiful hardwood floors.
I SLAMMED my arm into our side table.
Luke told me that this bruise is CHAMPION!!
While I am a faller, and the enormous bruise on the ankle from my last fall pales by comparison....I must admit...this might be my MOST impressive bruise to date.

Christianese
None of these are my words. They are from Seth Barnes, the guy who founded AIM. Adventures in Missions is where Seth works in Georgia. I actually subscribe to his blog. Here was the post I received last night.
Words have to convey the meaning we intend or they cease to work for us. So every now and then, we need to re-examine our words. For example, how is the word "Christian" working for you? I don't even know what it means anymore. Listening to it from outside the Christian milieu, it sounds too much like the word "legalist" or, even worse, "hypocrite." Used overseas in countries where the population is agnostic, it is an immediate turn-off for many, saying more about their perceptions of a bellicose American worldview or runaway consumerism than our faith. To them, the label "Christian" is a postmodern epithet.

To them, the label "Christian" is a postmodern epithet.
- Christians tend to define their faith in terms of what they do (Bible studies, church attendance, etc.).
- Christians talk about love, but are insular in their lifestyles.
- Christians do cheesy things like singing "If you're happy and you know it."
- Christians tend to frown on parties and major on rules and traditions.
In the interest of engaging unbelievers rather than shutting them down, I'm trying to cut back on the Christianese in my vocabulary. When someone tries to pigeonhole me, I might say, "I'm someone who follows Jesus" or maybe I'll use the phrase Jesus-follower, as in:
- J-Fs look at what Jesus said and did and make that a priority.
- J-Fs are aware of their own junk and don't worry about yours.
- J-Fs are more interested in your actions than in what you say you believe.
- J-Fs are OK having a bad day and not trying to cover it up with a song.
Are there "Christian" words that don't work for you anymore? My sense is that there are a whole slew of words that those outside the Christian subculture don't get. Some of us need to get our clear our ears of buzz words. Check out this blog for help: stufffchristianslike.
As we seek to communicate hope instead of exclusion, it might be helpful to take a closer look at the words we use and ask if they bring people closer to Jesus or if they shut people out. Evangelism starts with our language and language changes every generation whether we're up for change or not.
*Some people like "Christ-followers," but even that sounds a little too religious.

Friday Night Fun
Last night we went out to Green Mill to celebrate my birthday a few days early.
We had girls night. It was Kathy, Beth, Jennifer, Angela and I. We had some seriously good grub. Then we came back to our house for conversation, coffee, chuckles, cake....and PRESENTS!!!!!!!!!
I got some great stuff: gift cards, clothes, jewelry, a purse, candle and CANDY CORN!
It was such a fun night.
We met for dinner at 6:00. At 1:00 AM everybody headed for home.
I truly cherish these people.

2008 MTV Video Music Awards
Last night I watched almost all of the MTV VMA (Video Music Awards) on mute. This was the 25th anniversary show, and I had high hopes. I never miss these awards.
Mostly I realized that I am just out growing this music.
Rappers with thier butts hanging out of their pants, and hands on their crotch. The host was so foul, I couldn't stand to listen to him. Even Christina Aquilera was swearing in her song.
I am afraid I might have watched my last MTV awards show....and it sort of makes me sad. Music has changed a LOT over the years, and I don't think the change has been good. Instead of women being shown as strong, confident, independent beings, women are shown as objects. Objects to be oogled. It disgusts me.
Did anybody else watch the show?

Grateful
Friday
End of a busy week
Feeling ready for some rest
Sleeping in
Hanging with Ang
Enjoying time to breathe
Grateful for...
a home so homey
a family I adore
a God who loves
a career that is fulfilling

Sabelo
Seth returned from Africa in July with amazing stores, pictures, and imprints on his heart.
Here is Sabelo, a young boy he befriended in Swaziland.
Seth is a guy who has never really enjoyed young children.
He'd be the first to admit it.
This boy grabbed a piece of Seth's heart, a piece never to be replaced.
Listening to him talk about Sabelo touches my heart!

Backstreet Boys!
On August 23rd, Chloe and I went to see the Backstreet Boys at the State Fair.
Chloe won tickets from KDWB. Winning these tickets was pretty amazing!
Not only did she win tickets to the Grandstand show, but she also won tickets to get us in to the Minnesota State Fair.
We TOTALLY rocked out at this concert. We have seen them 4 or 5 times. Kevin is no longer in the group , but it was still a GREAT concert.....and a fun day that I got to spend with just Chloe.
How fun that she chose me.
She DID tell me, however, that if any of her friends like Backstreet Boys, she would have brought them. (I'll take time with my daughter any way I can get it!)

Labor Day
A beautiful day here
On the Gulf Coast people are not as lucky
the winds howl and the rains pelt
Al Roker lost his hat
My prayers are with this area
They can't do another Katrina
Off to the Renaissance Festival
Not sure what to expect...never been.
My day will be so different than those in the wake of Gustav
